The End of the World - May 21st

The end is coming!

And yet every prediction for 2,000 years has been - wrong.  And the Christs disciples (who should have know best) were convinced it would happen in their lifetimes - and they were wrong.

I would like to place a $5000 bet with any believer that we'll still be around on May 22nd.

Life can be tough - so people look for weird ways to find meaning.

  1. I wonder how much influence the fact that the 21st of May shows as "Armed Forces Day" has on the choice of available dates for something like this? It sounds like a convenient excuse to forget about paying your mortgage. Or being responsible for anything at all.

Any takers on the other side of your bet? Your problem: "believers" are scheduled to run out of money on the 21st, so good luck collecting.

Now that I know about this, I'm planning a rapture in my garden, followed by shameless amounts of champagne and strawberries. So there.

    over and out! Laura

  2. David,

I agree it is foolish to set a date for Jesus' return since Jesus Himself told us not to do that. But He did tell us to live with the confidence that someday He will return. Whether or not He returns in my lifetime doesn't really matter to me. You see, I have surrendered my life to Him, received His forgiveness, and know that I will be in His presence either when I die or He comes back, whichever happens first.

The Bible is very clear that when Jesus descends from the sky He will come in brilliant light. He's not returning as a carpenter from some small town in Galilee. He will break through the heavens as the Creator of this universe. And He's not coming again as the Lamb to carry our sin to the Cross. He's returning as the Righteous Judge Who will deal harshly with all those who rebelled against Him, including those who absent-mindedly thumbed their noses at Him.

I know you tend to think that those who follow Christ are weak or foolish or trying desperately to find meaning in life. But you think that way simply because you haven't yet acknowledged your sin and asked Jesus to forgive you. Once you realize how much you need Him, and receive Him, you will realize that it is the most sane thing a person can do.

  3. "I know you tend to think that those who follow Christ are weak or foolish"

Your words Marlon, not mine. In fact I would not use those words to describe believers since they are rude and condescending.

And you are wrong about me - not surprising since you don't know me. In high school I accepted Christ and asked that my sins be forgiven. It was not done lightly and at the time it was a meaningful experience to me. But over the next couple years it didn't stick - for a variety of reasons. But that, is another blog entry.
